About Usenet

Learning about Usenet

Usenet is a world wide discussion system conducted over the internet on a "user-network" aka Usenet. It was originally created at Duke University in 1979 by students Jim Ellis and Tom Truscott who allowed users to post news articles in groups so that all users would be able read them. This later became known as "newsgroups" and is what they are referred to today. When an article is posted to usenet, it is posted in a select group of similiar articles located within the same newsgroup.

Many websites today use a bulletin board system commonly referred to as web forums, which have now replaced usenet as a form of text based internet communication. Yet unlike most bulletin board systems today; usenet has no central location, central server or system owner. Today most users access usenet to download files in the form of seperate articles from the same newsgroup posted by other users. These articles are later combined to create one or multiple compressed files such as .zip or .rar and then extracted to achieve the intended file structure.

What is Usenet?

It is easy to think of Usenet as hundreds if not thousands of servers that share data with one another. These servers are located on extremely fast networks and carry an amazing amount of bandwidth. Every server is in a group or groups with other servers in the same group. As files are uploaded to a server in a newsgroup such as alt.binaries.movies, that server then uploads that file to every server in the newsgroup alt.binaries.movies. This ensures that files remain accessible for up to 200 days until they are no longer retained.

In order to download from a newsgroup you must have the following first connect to your usenet provider(ie: GigaNews) within your usenet program(ie: Newsleecher) and then search for your intended file within the newsgroup it should be located. If you use the SuperSearch function to search for lets say, "pirates movie", it will look in every single newsgroup on usenet for you, so you don't have to search each newsgroup individually. SuperSearch may find your intended filename, "pirates movie", on multiple usenet newsgroups such as alt.binaries.movies, alt.binaries.x, alt.binaries.dvd, etc - by choosing to use SuperSearch with Newsleecher you will save an enormous amount of time.

Is Usenet good?

Yes! One thing you'll learn very quick is that Usenet is much better than any peer-to-peer or .torrent network you've ever used. It's hard to compare to anything to usenet beczause with a usenet provider and a usenet client like newsleecher you'll be using the best downloading software available on the internet.
